SUMMER OUTREACH NATURALIST

Trees For Tomorrow is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a temporary intern position. The Summer Outreach Naturalist will provide quality natural resources and outdoor education programs to the public at area resorts and campgrounds.  Must effectively work with people of all ages in a variety of settings, and represent Trees For Tomorrow in a professional manner.  Dates of employment:  June 8 –August 21, 2008.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in training at the beginning of summer and throughout the season.
  • Visit each site once a week to conduct a naturalist program on varying topics.
  • Create simple posters advertising the following week’s program for each site to post and/or distribute to guests.
  • Work on and implement new programs throughout the summer.
  • Maintain records for each site on relevant program information.
  • Requirements:

  • Minimum of junior status in a natural resources, environmental education, outdoor education, biology, or other related field.  Internship credits can be earned.
  • Previous programming experience with children, families, and/or adults. 
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent communication skills with a variety of audiences and in a variety of situations including hikes, campfires, interactive lectures, active events, and slide presentations.
  • High motivation and ability to work independently.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions. 
  • Salary:  $800 per month plus room and board.

    SEASONAL NATURALIST (4 positions open)

    August 24, 2008 - May 22, 2009

    Trees For Tomorrow is seeking four highly motivated individuals who would like to gain experience in teaching people of all ages about the sustainability and proper management of natural resources. Seasonal Naturalist positions are career development opportunities that allow you to experience first-hand whether teaching about the outdoors is for you.

    Duties:

    As a Seasonal Naturalist you will join Trees For Tomorrow in August and be able to experience three seasons of on-going learning and hands-on teaching about natural resources. You must be willing to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends. Programs and activities change seasonally as well with the different age groups we work with (fourth grade on up to senior citizens). Some of our "core programs" include Tree Identification, Orienteering, GPS, Cross Country Skiing, Water Testing, Bog Hikes, Wilderness Hikes, and evening talks on a number of different wildlife species.

    Experience Gained:

    • Ongoing learning of effective hands-on teaching techniques from our professional staff of naturalists, biologists, and foresters.
    • Valuable teaching experience by leading a variety of nature-related activities for diverse audiences, both indoors and out.
    • Evaluations of your teaching style by the full-time education staff and yourself.
    • A daily log of your experience and development
    • An education about the Northwoods including natural history, diverse ecosystems, and resource management techniques.
    • Writing skills when you develop articles and have your work published in Northbound, our quarterly newspaper on natural resources and environmental issues.
    • Design and development skills as you complete an interpretive project or educational curriculum activity for us in the on-going programs at Trees For Tomorrow.
    • Computer and audio visual equipment skills.
    • Dorm counselor during two three-day high school careers workshops focused on careers in natural resources.
    • The opportunity to develop grant writing skills.
    • Tours of other Midwest nature centers to gain ideas for programs, projects and future employment.
    • Networking opportunities with resource professionals from the U.S Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and a variety of forest products industries to help assess career choices.
    • Additional learning opportunities through off-site workshops, in-house special programs and staff enrichment sessions.
    • Making new friends and lifelong memories while doing a little hard work in the beautiful Northwoods!

    Qualifications:

    • A willingness to learn and teach!
    • Cross country skiing or snowshoeing experience is a plus, but can be learned on the job.
    • A positive attitude and ability to work well with others are the key attributes of a Seasonal Naturalist.
    • Recent college degree in biology, forestry, wildlife, environmental education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or other related field required. Students at the junior or senior level of college are also considered. Career path transitioners are also welcome to apply.
    • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification valid through May 22, 2009.
